Google Maps Lead Generation: A Practical Checklist

Published

Most lead lists fail because they are big and untargeted. A short, filtered list of businesses that really need what you sell converts better. Use this checklist before you export anything.

1. Pick one niche and one place

Search "business type in city" for a single combination. A focused list is easier to personalize than a mixed one. You can always repeat the process for the next city.

2. Decide what a good lead looks like

Write it down before you scan. For example: at least 15 reviews, rating below 4.5, no website. A lower rating often means the owner cares about reputation and may welcome help with reviews. No website means you can offer one.

3. Use checkpoints for quick yes or no columns

Checkpoints add simple columns to your export: has website, has phone, website is a social page only, under 10 reviews and rating under 4.5. They turn a long list into something you can sort and act on.

4. Scan, then look at the outlined results

Press Scan and filter and check the outlined listings on the map list. If the match count looks too small or too large, adjust the filters and press Refresh. The results already loaded are kept, so you do not start over.

5. Export and clean up

Export to CSV or copy into Sheets. Remove rows that are not a fit, such as chains with a national website, and keep the rest in a tracker with a status column.

Example: a list for a web designer

Search "restaurants in your city". Set Website to "Only without", a minimum of 20 reviews, and select name, phone, address and the Google Maps link. Scan, check the outlined results, export, and you have a short list of busy places that have no website.

Example: a list for a reputation or review service

Search "dentists in your city". Set a maximum rating of 4.3 and a minimum of 30 reviews, so you see established businesses with room to improve their rating. Select the rating and reviews fields so you can sort by them in your sheet.

Common mistakes

Exporting everything and sorting it out later wastes time, so decide your filters first. Contacting a long list with the same message gets ignored, so personalize the first line. Skipping a check of the listing before you call or write leads to awkward messages to businesses that have closed or moved.

6. Contact with care

Reach out one to one, mention something specific about the business, and make it easy to say no. Follow the email and calling rules of your country and the businesses you contact.
